Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate was an old piece of trim to the French Foreign Legion and was founded in 1928, having been chosen by the French as a strategic base to pacify the south. Situated at 1160m altitude, at the intersection of the Draa Valley and Dadés, with the Region of Agadir to the West, is on the main route between the mountains and the desert. It is also a good starting point to visit Ait Ben Haddou and the Palm Grove of Skoura.

Ouarzazate is a peaceful town Gallego, with wide streets, many hotels and gardens. Avenue Mohamed V, the only main street, which runs through the town. About 6 Km’s outside of Ouarzazate, the exit for Marrakech are the movie studios are surrounded by high walls of pisé which appear to be defended by huge figures pseudo-Egyptian hollywoodesco style. The studios are covering an area of 30,000 m2 of desert and are the sustenance of a considerable part of the population. During a century were filmed hundreds of films in this region.

The Kasbah Taouirt is the only historic building of Ouarzazate and a monument to the expansionism of glaoui.
Begun in the 18th century and restored in the next century, the Kasbah is to be restored since 1994. The facade of steep walls of clay is chopped and decorated with geometric patterns in relief. Inside, a maze of stairs in all levels of edfício gives access to meeting rooms of different sizes, lit by windows.

Next to the Kasbah is an old berber village, probably before the Kasbah and is still today by an active population. The artisan center in front of the Kasbah Taouirt has carpets, stone sculptures, jewelry and ceramics.
